Welcome and thanks for stopping by. No, we are not doing Hidayatun Nahw in this course, or not at least for now. Just Nahw itself and Sarf. Did you take this course? How was your experience?

I took the class last year, and I also attended the first few lessons in this current online class (I was Ali_Godil), and unless I was hallucinating, he would cover hidayatun nahw after the level I lesson.
Anyhow, these classes are very beneficial. They provide an excellent foundation for furthering your study of the language. A bit of advice would be to make a list of all of the new vocabulary you aquire in qasas. If it is a verb, list the perfect and imperfect tenses and masdar, and if it is an ism, include its plural as well. Otherwise, you will not effectively aquire the vocabulary. Additionally, be persistant; some of the topics, especially ta’leel in sarf, can be quite discouraging at first, but if you remain stedfast, you will begin to understand them.

Could this be the English translation of “Qasasun Nabiyyeen”? (http://onlineislamicstore.com/b2633.html). I’m almost sure that I came across an English translation of Abul-Hasan Ali al-Nadwi’s “Qasasun Nabiyyeen”. I remember having seen a French translation of it in Damascus.
Also, considering that the Arabic of the Qasasun-Nabiyyeen is not so difficult or rather gets gradually and progressively more difficult, would’nt it be better to just use the Arabic? This is just my own personal view. The translation might be good, though, for self-learning to check your own translation against.

I would defnitely agree with you. Nothing better than reading and learning using Arabic itself. One of the best thing about the Arabic version is that you can do tarkeeb which is not possible to do in a translated version

Here are answers to your queries:
1) How much time outside class should we be willing to spend?
The classes are on weekends; if you spend two hours through the week that should be enough for you
2)Do u guys take notes or not?

The only requirement for this program is that you know the alpahabet and how to read Arabic. Here is a rule of thumb: if you have read the Quran then that should be sufficient
4)Do we have to memorize things?
Yes, but then no knowledge comes without retention
5)Is it so fast paced that if u fall behind u are likely to quit?
No it is not. Each lecture is recorded and you can listen back to it as many time as you like by downloading the audio files

Yes, even if you do online then you can out 2hrs other than the classes and should feel at par with the rest of the class.
I would highly recommend that you take notes since they will be your reference point coupled with the audio recordings.

The blog here is all (or almost all) of my notes from Shariah Program, up until Sept 2007.So the earlier posts in the blog are the earlier notes from the class.
If you know Arabic reading and writing that should be sufficient for you to get started with Shariah Program. The course continues through the summer and the breaks are usually only for long weekends. I would highly recommend that you do not skip classes. Worst come worst, you can listen back to the audio recordings of each class.

Brother I have noticed there is an issue with the Arabic fonts not displaying properly on some systems. This issue can be easily solved by using webfonts. When a webfont is used, the user does not need to have the fonts installed on his machine. The font is loaded from the website itself.
You can convert any Arabic font into a webfont by using one of the many webfont generators online. There are many tutorials on how to add them to one’s website. It is a very easy task, but one with a lot of benefit.
