Exam, fonts, and updates
Posted by sheepoo on May 3, 2007
We are having our semester exam on the 5th of May, Insha Allah. After that, Sheikh Yousuf leaves for Karachi for the next 3 weeks so the updates to this site may be a little infrequent. In the meantime, I have found a better way of rendering Arabic fonts (see this post and compare to the earlier ones) so I will be changing all the previous posts to use this new method to make reading the Arabic words easier.

Assalamu ‘alaykum brother Ali,
So what is the secret to the Arabic font? Please share.
Bilal

No Secret. Here is the CSS which I am using
<span style=”font-weight: bold; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 2; font-family: Traditional Arabic”>{put arabic here}</span>
For writing arabic, I use MS Word, and then copy paste in code-mode in word press
Hope this helps…

Did we have the test today? I had a Chemistry final so I missed class today. Do you know what the deal is for the online students?
Jazak Allahu khayr.
May 5, 2007 at 10:36 pm
Yes there was a test today and a real tough one
, although every thing was from the stuff we had already covered.
The online students are supposed to email the test to spexamatgmaildotcom. Maybe you can call Sh. Yousuf and ask him to send you the test
May Allah bless You!

Jazak Allahu khayr for the info.
May 6, 2007 at 12:43 am
Oh no a tough one

Assalam u alaikum Br. Mujahid7ia,
Did you manage to get a hold of the test? If not, it’s available on our regular student website (from where we get our audio lectures/slides etc.)
It’s called ‘Shariah Program Exam Semester 1′ or something like that. You just complete it and send it to spexam@gmail.com

Jazak Allahu khayr for the info, Waqas.

As Salamu’alaykum,
Just wondering, has 2nd semester started yet? Jazakallah khair.
June 1, 2007 at 2:04 am
No, it has not. Insha Allah, it will start this weekend (2nd June)

Assalamu alikum
He was visiting Karachi. Ah, that is the reason (maybe)!! I sent an email to Shariah Program a week ago but never heard back from them or from the shaykh. Sheepoo, I have three questions to ask:
When does the shaykh come back to “Frist semester”? Would that be in August/September. Meaning, for people who missed the first semester completely (me) and hence can’t take the sebsequent semesters because of lack of background knowledge, what would they do? Note, I will be distance learning student.
Should I wait for Mufti Yusuf’s reply or is there another way to register or find out when I can register? If I can’t figure out what’s going on, I will register with Sunnipath’s first introductory Arabic course, which starts on June 14.
Your notes from the Shariah Program start from Feb. 13th on your blog? Is that right. Please do reply to my questions…jazkallahu kharyn
June 4, 2007 at 12:49 pm
AoA Hamza,
Glad to see you here. I doubt that you will get any reply from the Shriah Program email. Sheikh Yousuf seldom checks that email (especially during the course). He prefers to be contacted via MSN or on phone. I will Insha Allah ask him how you can best get in touch with him.
As for “coming back to the first semester”, according to my knowledge the course only starts once a year and that is in Feb. Again, I will check with the Sheikh.
Finally, it is correct that my notes start from 13th Feb. That is the week when we had our first class at the Shriah Program.
I hope this helps!
Jazak Allah

walikum assalam
Jazakallahu khayrn for you reply. Please do ask him about his contact and double-check when the year starts. If it starts in Feb., this means I’ll have to wait until Feb. to enroll? It’s a two-year program, right? Does that mean the second year for you guys also starts next Feb.?
June 4, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Hamza,
It is correct that this is a two year program. I am not sure of the exact date when the next year starts. But, looking at the pace we are going, it should start around Feb-Mar of next year, Insha Allah
June 4, 2007 at 11:26 pm
According to your CSS … wouldn’t that require other users to have the “Traditional Arabic” font as well?
June 5, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Sunnilink,
The Traditional Arabic Font is installed by default by Windows. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a Linux based machine to test the page rendering. Hopefully, it will show up correctly on non-Windows machines as well.
Jazak Allah!

salam — I just went to your blog on my linux computer and yeah it doesn’t work unfortunately.
June 7, 2007 at 1:19 am
Hum!!! That is not good. Do you have any suggestions as to what can be done to remedy this?
Jazak Allah
June 8, 2007 at 12:09 am
I’ll research into and let you know, inshaAllah.
June 11, 2007 at 1:31 am
Hamza,
I talked with Mufti Yousuf and you can call him at his 647 number (available at http://www.shariahprogram.ca/contact.shtml)
Unfortunately, the course only starts once a year, around Feb
I hope that helps

Assalamu alikum
JazakAllahu khair….that’s what i feared. i am going to take the Sunnipath course because i don’t want to wait until next Feb. i’ll refer to your notes as well if i need any clarification, inshaAllah.
June 11, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Hamza,
All the best for your endeavours! May Allah provide you with what is best in the Hereafter and in this World!
June 24, 2007 at 4:32 am
Assalamu alikum
InshaAllah, ameen.
I don’t want to bother Shaykh Yousuf but can you ask him or can you tell me if Qasas-un-Nabiyeen of Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi comes with tashkeel/harakaat or without tashkeel. I am planning to buy the whole set but I want to know if the text is w/ or w/o tashkeel. I know the shariahprogram uses this book so I think you might know/find out.
Do you know any other simple/beginner’s text to read and apply what we learn as we go through the Arabic course, perferrably with taskhkeel because I don’t think even in two/three months time I will be able to do any reading without tashkeel, Allahu ‘Alam.
JazakAllahu khair
June 24, 2007 at 9:32 pm
Hamza,
Qasas comes with Tashkeel so you will benefit from it. As for other books, just today I was talking to another person about this and it seems that he may have some books which are for beginners (and they have tashkeel too) . I will update you as soon as I get some information
June 25, 2007 at 1:51 am
JazakAllahu khair…great! Please do update me about other books so I will order them together with Qasas-un-nabiyeen.
June 30, 2007 at 7:15 am
Assalamu alikum
Sheepoo, any update on other books that some certain person was going to recommend to you? I am going to order Qasas-un-nabiyeen with a couple of others books also if I get recommendation for some other ones. JazakAllahu khair
June 30, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Hamza,
Due to the Canada Day Long weekend there is no class on 30th June and 1st July. The latest I can get some information back to you is next weekend. I hope this will not be too much of a wait. By the way, where are you going to order Qasas from? Directly from Pakistan?
JAzak Allah
July 1, 2007 at 3:46 am
Ok, sure. I am going to order Qasas from http://www.albalagh.net/bookstore/?action=view&item=0368 and if you recommend other books and I find them also on albalagh then I will order all of the books together.
July 14, 2007 at 5:16 am
Assalamu alikum,
I think I’m going to order Qasas and when inshaAllah I finish it I will order some other book. Also, I was wondering haven’t you guys started reading a book or booklet or something? I’m sure you guys read passages but when are you expected to start reading or you are asked to read Qasas, after this semester? meaning after six months of starting the program?
July 17, 2007 at 12:29 pm
Hamza,
We regularly read Qasas as part of our course.
Jazak Allah
